Impertinent Questions for Amy Matthews

What is your favourite synonym for “bum”?

I’m quite unimaginative with euphemisms for bum, but I’ve always enjoyed my Dad calling it an ‘aris’. I’ve always known it was cockney rhyming slang but it’s taken until answering this question to look up what it means. Strap in. ‘Bottle and glass stands’ for ‘arse’, and ‘bottle’ becomes ‘aristotle’, which is then shortened to ‘aris’. Quite the scenic route.

Whose swearing makes you laugh the most?

Any child.

Who should come to see your show and why?

Anyone with a spare half hour – if your Live at the Apollo and Qi credits are a little thin on the ground then you really do have to take what you can get. I think people who are real comedy fans would be nice to get in. And anyone who just wants a bit of light-heartedness in amongst it all.

Who are you excited about seeing this year?

I can’t wait to see Bryony Kimmings – she’s a very funny and powerful performance artist who really flips every assumption about performance art on its head. I’m excited to see John Robins, Fern Brady, Suzi Ruffell. I gigged with Michael Odewale the other day and thought he was excellent so I’m going to try and get along to see his show.

Imagine you come off stage and find a wish come true. Which food/drink/present/person would be waiting for you?

A pint of Tiny Rebel’s ‘Stay Puft’. (My masterplan is to mention this enough publicly to eventually get a sponsorship, I love the stuff)

Describe your perfect day at the Fringe.

No show of my own to do. Go and see a couple of shows – probably comedy. I like to try and do a bit of both people I really want to see, and people to take a punt on. I’d like some Pad Thai from Caravan to be involved somewhere, and have it finished off with some pints outside with friends.

How long does it take to come down after a show and how do you do it?

I’m usually quite calm. If it’s a late gig and I’m really awake but need to get to sleep, I always listen to ASMR before bed (which my boyfriend hates because he can hear the whispering through my earphones and says it’s like sharing a bed with the borrowers).

In the game “Would You Rather?” what’s the hardest choice you have had to make?

I chose shotting the Domino’s garlic and herb dip over something else once, and now I can’t touch it, it makes me feel sick.

What’s your favourite Brexit metaphor?

Post-colonial countries must be watching this from afar like someone seeing their controlling ex boyfriend having a breakdown of Facebook after he punched himself in the face.

Who or what helped you believe you were going to make it in comedy?

No comedian I know believes they’re going to make it, haha. We’re literally a community of weirdos riddled with self-doubt. I think seeing the ‘school year’ of Sara Pascoe, Katehrine Ryan, Roisin Conaty, Aisling Bea etc really made me confident enough to try it. I think it was the first time I’d seen people I could really see myself in on a panel show. I guess that’s testament to the importance of representation – you can’t be what you can’t see.

Tell us something your agent doesn’t want us to know.

I don’t actually have one, but if I did, I’m sure they wouldn’t want me to tell you how eternally grateful I am for having an agent…
